WWW.Wednesday: Books Read In The Sub Zero Midwest

What are you currently reading?

This book came highly recommended from a friend who has a great pulse on what I like to read. I was concerned because it had a slow-ish start and I couldn’t get into a rhythm with Messud’s writing style (probably because I went right from Stoner to it.) I am all in and so hooked. It is extremely intriguing.

What have you recently finished?

This book is beautifully written love story (of people and academia) and sad and tender. So simple yet lovely in every sense of the word. I can’t say enough about it. It’s set at the University of Missouri and spans the course of 50 years of one man’s life.

What will you read next?

This one, if my husband finishes soon. Otherwise, I’ll have to choose something else.

Check out more book lovers’ lists at Should Be Reading.

One of my blog-friends is reading The Woman Upstairs, too. I'm going to have to pick it up!

I too have a blogger friend who is reading The Woman Upstairs, it sounds quite dark, quite a contrast to Stoner!

Pick it up! It's really good. Keeps you coming back for more.

Stoner was dark in a different way. William Stoner leads a sadly ordinary, unfulfilling life but does have moments of happiness and passion. Both so different from one another in writing style and subject in general but share the characters share a sense of loneliness and experience of love.

I'm reading The Orenda by Joseph Boyden. So far it's violent yet tender, informative yet familiar, historic yet modern. I'm loving it.

These all look great. I just downloaded Sue Monk Kidd's latest -- The Invention of Wings. So far I'm in awe of her attention to historic detail and how she paints such a vivid picture of that tragic part of Southern history. I just started but I'm hooked.

I picked up The Invention of Wings at Costco recently. I can't wait to read it and also read your review or opinion of it. I can see, for you, that the setting would be a compelling read. I love being pulled in so deep by a book. The Woman Upstairs is like that in a way as well.
