WWW.Wednesday: Up Too Late Sneaking In Pages

In a hurry but wanted to share what I’ve been reading (over at Should Be Reading). I just wish there were a few more minutes in the day these days. Like every Christmastime reader, I’ve been staying up way too late to sneak in a few extra pages/chapters.

What am I currently reading?

 

Someone

I haven’t read much Alice McDermott; I think Charming Billy, which I liked, was the only other and that was so long ago. A testament to how much I like a book is whether it never leaves my side or I pull it out at stoplights. I’ve found myself pretty tight with Someone. I’m nearly finished.

What have I recently finished?

 

The Circle

I liked this book though didn’t love it. It is a very quick read and kept me (usually) engaged. It’s a creepy premise. How much should we know about everything/everyone in this world? My personal feeling…I don’t need to know (shouldn’t know) everything about everyone and I’d rather not have everyone/anyone know everything about me. I’m too private and I misbehave.

What will I read next?

I need to make a dent in the books I have here at home so probably:

 

The Sea

Stoner

Have you heard about S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst? I just about wet myself when it was delivered last week (actually two copies, Merry Christmas to me and one for a friend). If you don’t know about it, Google it. It will take some time, I’ve heard, so this will be a January project.

WWW.Wednesday: Book Obsessions

We all know it’s Wednesday and on Wednesday’s, for the last month or two, I’ve been talking about books and linking it up over at Should Be Reading. So here we go:

What am I currently reading?

This book starts out very quickly paced which I love. I’m about one-third through. It’s about a young, Google-like internet company and the whole “Big Brother” technology which is scary as it becomes increasingly more and more possible.

Also, I’m intermingling these spicy short stories.

What did I recently finish?

Absolutely outstanding. Five stars all the way. I'm addicted to and obsessed with Alice Munro.

What will I read next?

Well, I am in current violation of the moratorium on book buying that has been issued for this household. I expect UPS to ring my doorbell at any minute. Even though I have stacks and stack here from which to choose, here are the incoming:

WWW. Wednesday: BOOKS!!!

Over at Should Be Reading, we answer three questions on Wednesdays. 

-       What are you reading?

I also have Runaway (another book of short stories by the same author). I’m not sure if I will alternate back and forth intermingling stories between both books, or not.*

I’m almost finished listening to Eleanor and Park and my heart will be broken when I hear it’s final words.

-       What did you recently finish?

I gave it 3-stars on Goodreads because I liked it. I didn’t love it. McEwan (On Chesil Beach remains my favorite) is one of the best writers on the planet. I love his narration. It’s crisp, descriptive enough without overdoing it. Sometimes it seems so plain that you could miss what’s happening. I know this about his writing so sometimes it takes a bit of focus. His books always start out slow and Amsterdam was no exception.

Three men (although only two I’d consider main characters) are connected to each other because they had the same lover at one point in their lives. Molly. The book begins with Molly’s memorial service which all three attend much to the distaste of her husband.

I couldn’t stand any of the characters (which doesn’t mean I don’t/won’t like a book). They were narcissistic as indicated by the length they would go to satisfy their ambitions and betray each other. The ending befits the lot of them. If you like McEwan, you'll also enjoy this book.

-       What will you read next?

     I’m never sure. It will depend how I feel when I finish Munro’s short stories. I’m craving a little spice because the books I’ve been reading are tame. Eleanor and Park has so much sweet and tender first love stuff that it’s making me crave more, uh, sexy stuff.

*Do you read one book straight through to conclusion or intermingle your reading between two or more essentially reading multiple books at the same time? I have a friend who does this (picks up whichever book strikes his mood at the time) and reads 6, 8, 10 at a time. Just curious!

I am a monogamous reader. Always have been but everyone has their own style.

WWW.Wednesday: All About Books!

Books are my favorite things in the world. I was recently accused (identity to remain nameless) of reading too much. I have no problem admitting it. And I’ve been reading instead of writing so that’s my excuse for an almost complete disregard for this blog. It’s been fantastic and if I hadn’t already committed to NaBlogPoMo over at Yeah Write, I would happily continue reading. My “tbr” list is long.

So for WWW. Wednesday at Should Be Reading (thank you for bringing everyone together) we need to answer these three questions to play along.

I am currently reading:

To say that I’m obsessed with this book is an understatement. I think about it all the time. I read it while I cook, wait in the car, etc… I even woke during last night (4:00am) seemingly unable to sleep and read an hour. I can’t seem to think about anything else. Only 300 pages left (At a point where wheels are falling off and I love when that happens) of nearly 800. I will be depressed when I finish.

And currently listening to:

I never think of myself as a YA fan but have read a few lately. This one (about 1/3 in) is, for me, outstanding so far. Ahhhh, young and new love. There’s nothing like it in the world.

I recently finished:

I really, really liked this light book. It was quirky. I love quirky. It kept me wanting to read page after page right to the end. Very sweet.

I’m not entirely sure what I will read next but it will be between two I have sitting next to my bed:
