This
is not your ordinary, everyday stuffed animal. Please meet “Do Not Disturb”
kitty. These special kitties live together at Riverbend, a beautiful lodge in
the woods of Wisconsin. Their tag says, “Put the cat out.”
Obviously,
these kitties are laid outside one’s door in the evening before bed, or
whatever, and sometimes in the afternoon when guests want a little quiet time.
Over
the course of many visits to Riverbend, we’ve often played with "the kitties". Sometimes they wind up in precarious positions with other
kitties, outside our friends’ doors, in the wee hours of the night. They’re a
source of daily amusement because, even at our age, we’re occasionally juvenile. I'm guessing we aren't the only guests who do this but I could be wrong.
On Saturday morning, we leisurely wandered into Riverbend's festive lobby and sniggered wondering if our kitties were curled up on the beds. Opening the door to our room, I immediately saw my cute little friend.
On Saturday morning, we leisurely wandered into Riverbend's festive lobby and sniggered wondering if our kitties were curled up on the beds. Opening the door to our room, I immediately saw my cute little friend.
I was so excited, I snapped the picture and sent it to my girlfriends in a text with a caption. The caption was inappropriate in nature as it made reference to my kitty. There are many improper connotations to the use and term of "kitty" so one might pose the question, “Why not use stuffed puppies instead?”
A few minutes later while sitting at lunch in the dining room, one of my three girlfriends said, “Oh my God! I got your text. It was hilarious.”
“Bob
wondered why I was laughing so hard.” Said another friend.
“How
come I didn’t get a text message from you?” My third friend said disappointedly.
“That’s
strange. You were the first contact I entered for the group text.” I insisted. “Must
be the cell reception here.”
My
first friend replied, “See here. Your name’s….” and she stopped mid-sentence.
“Her
name’s what?” I asked in confusion.
“Oh,
no! You posted it on her Facebook wall.”
My friends burst out in raucous laughter now getting the attention of our husbands sitting at the other end of the table.
My friends burst out in raucous laughter now getting the attention of our husbands sitting at the other end of the table.
As
the realization sunk in, an odd sort of frenzied laughter began bubbling up from
deep inside of me. The pieces of the puzzle were
beginning to arrange themselves. It started to make sense.
“Get
it down!” I said mortified.
“I’m
trying. Cell service is really bad and I can’t get on the Internet. We’re too
remote.”
“Crap! Please try harder. My kids and their friends are going to see it.”
I
was starting to panic while everyone was laughing, which on one hand was
helping but at the same time it was distracting to my friend who was desperately trying to figure it out. It
wasn’t until we located a desktop in the library that we could truly assess the
damage.
Four
“likes” in ten minutes!
So what’s
the lesson here?
Is
it to be more careful before sending inappropriate text messages?
OR
Refrain from sending inappropriate texts at all?
The
moral of the story, however, is you’re not necessarily “off the grid” even when
you think you are.
oh Gina!!! :) :) :) did your kids ever see it?
ReplyDeleteI was laughing so very hard out of shear embarrassment that I couldn't breathe. My daughter texted me later. "Mom, what were you thinking?" My response, "It was an accident but apparently I wasn't at the time." I'm too impulsive for my own good.
DeleteOh, I've done that more times then I care to mention. The worst is when my in-laws see it!!! Agh!!! It's always hilarious to everyone else!
ReplyDeleteIt's really my phone's fault. It saves not only contact numbers but assumes I want the facebook profile saved under contacts as well. I was just pushing buttons and "Poof" off it went. I need to be more careful though now that I realize this! Oh yeah! They all thought it was a riot until they realized I wasn't laughing with the same delight.
DeleteThis is why i never do mass texts for holidays or whatever.
ReplyDeletehilarious
It was to a small group. Just three of my friends but I was hurrying and hungry and, And... Lessons!!!
DeleteOh my god hahahahaha. Mass texts are just too risky to even contemplate!
ReplyDeleteIt was only to three people. THREE! I didn't even get that off right.
DeleteHahahaha! That's hilarious! I bet it never would have happened if that place used stuffed puppies.
ReplyDeleteBee, my point exactly. Switch them to puppies and there's no problem at all except for maybe the positioning of them in front of doors thingy. Funny thing is, it's just the girls doing it.
DeleteOh boy. I live in horror of this happening. That horror has grown exponentially reading this. I'm happy that you can laugh about it. it is a funny story - in retrospect!
ReplyDeleteThere are worse things but I like to keep my inappropriate behavior between me and my close friends. I do not like the inter-webs involved for obvious reasons. I've written "I shall be more careful" 100X! It's funny today. On Saturday afternoon, not so much.
DeleteI love inappropriateness. It makes me feel at home.
ReplyDelete:)
It's where I reside most often. I have fun living there but I don't recommend it for the faint of heart. It can be stressful.
DeleteHahahhahah whoopsies! Oh well, these things happen
ReplyDeleteYes, they do and if you're me, well...
DeleteHah, almost spit out my drink with this one, blondie. ;)
ReplyDeleteNo blonde jokes would be appreciated at this time.
DeleteLol Whoops! I have some friends that would have insisted on leaving the comment there. And others that would have been mortified. It all depends on the company you keep. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am used to embarrassment, mortification, back pedaling and other such pursuits. Anyone is welcome to leave a comment here. Those in glass houses...
DeleteWell, even if you weren't happy to be on the grid, I'm glad to see you on this grid! And thanks for the fun cautionary tale. Not that it'll stop me from making the same mistake, but at least I'll be in good company.
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks Miz Yank! I'd LOVE to have company! It's always nice to know you're not the only one doing inappropriate things.
DeleteOh, funny, funny, funny!
ReplyDeleteI do mas texts of photos of my kids. Nothing else.
I do small group photo sharing and texts to friends or my kids. I've never, ever sent something to all of my contacts and that's probably a good thing for me to stay away from in the future. See, I'm learning ;-)
DeleteHilarious! Although I'm sure you were mortified at the time! I don't quite get how one recipient of a group text could post on FB instead - unless you sent the texts separate?. It's such a different setup on my phone I'm not sure how that could happen!
ReplyDeleteAt least it made a great story :)
I don't know much about my phone but from what I understand, it syncs all of my contact info (as of the new platform update this fall). So when I pulled up my friend, I had home#, cell# and FB profile to select from. Not being able to see well, I chose the top one. In hindsight, I do remember that particular selection was the first one and having her first, maiden and last name which would be her FB page. I was in a hurry. Sometimes I hate my phone. It does things without asking me.
DeleteOh, man! What a hilarious story! I want to hang out with you and your friends, minus the Facebooking. So damn funny.
ReplyDeleteIt was funny AFTER she got it down (it was obviously not the photo but the caption being the problem). We have a pact that nothing goes on FB, ever. Please hang out with us. We're really funny but you have to do silly!!!
DeleteIt's these smart phones. When I got mine it pulled in all of my Facebook and Twitter contacts. I actually butt-dialed and old co-worker. One who happens to live in Ohio. I have no idea how much that cost!
ReplyDeleteAs embarrassing as that was, I've sent some texts that would be horrifying to have posted on someones FB wall.
All the way from Canada!!! International-ish rates I'm assuming. Yikes!!!
DeleteThat's exactly what happened. I didn't realize my phone pulled in all of my Facebook stuff, too.
I send plenty of text messages that are "for your eyes" only in nature. This was meant for 3, not, 166 give or take, Facebook friends of mine. Hell, I'm never on Facebook anyway so it's unusual. Catch me in person... that's a whole different story altogether!!!
Ha! This makes me glad my girls are not old enough to be on Facebook yet!
ReplyDeleteThat all comes soon enough. Actually, my college girl is on the back end of that now. She isn't on FB the way she used to be. Other interests now.
DeleteI love this side of you!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, me too! Inappropriateness comes easily to me. Sad but true?
DeleteBa ha ha ha! Nice one, Gina. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kiki! Frantic moments get the heart pumping!
DeleteI think the lesson is: You get a lot of facebook love when you "work blue." ; )
ReplyDelete"Tis true! Usually don't like that much love from my distant acquaintances.
DeleteWhat did the text say?
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm very uncomfortable saying in mixed company. Thanks for asking though!
