It's Monday, May 2nd! What Are You Reading?

Hosted by The Book Date

Here it is, Monday once again! It was an exciting weekend indeed. I met one of my idols/girl crushes. The Chicago Humanities Foundation event on Saturday night was Mary-Louise Park who wrote the amazing memoir titled Dear Mr. You. My feelings about her, the book, and the evening are fair too extensive and deserve a post of their own. If you want to read a great and recent review of her book, check out this fun one over at a favorite book reviewing website, Dunce Academy.

What have I recently finished?

Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. Here’s what I said about it in last week’s post. This book. So many feelings. I’ve been there.

Felicity by Mary Oliver. I am a devoted Oliver fan. Her poems make my heart sing. This is my third collection. I will continue to seek out her words as long as I live.

What am I currently reading?

I am just about finished listening to The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. I forgot how sociopathic Tom Ripley truly is.

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Mara. The four stories I have so far read have been outstanding! Here is a review I enjoyed.

The Little Virtues by Natalia Ginzburg. These are essays translated from Italian. Recommended by Zadie Smith (who wrote White Teeth), in an article I found in this link.

Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys. This one is touted by Lauren Groff, of Fates and Furies fame, in the article mentioned above. I loved that book. How could I resist?

What will I read next?

No one knows but the shadow. My mom says this a lot.

Tell me, tell me! What are you reading?

  1. Dang I’m still on the same stuff I was last time I commented. LOL! Which reminds me, let me check on A Man Called Ove….

    4 people ahead of me.

  2. Yes to Mary Oliver! I can never decide if I want to read them all at once or space them out as far as possible!

    1. I hear you! With "American Primitive" I blazed through. Sort of wish I hadn't because I almost immediately gave it away. "Dream Work" followed in the same form and fashion. Devoured and left my hands. I was determined to linger with "Felicity", and I did. From now on, I will longingly space them out. Thanks for stopping by, Lindsey!

  3. Nice to get to meet and listen to someone you really like through their memoir.

    1. Could possibly be my favorite so far with Donna Tartt being on even par. She's very accessible and revealing. She talked about being "naked" ,not just literally, but with emotions and thoughts and creativity as well. She is one of the brightest, most well-spoken, passionate people I have encountered.

    1. I love reading about them too! I have about one hour of listening time left. I forgot the ending (from the movie) so that's a good thing. I love Elena Ferrante for dark, maybe not sociopaths. Have you read The Days of Anandonment or The Lost Daughter both by her? What books featuring sociopathic behavior would you recommend?

  5. Interesting sounding books.

I actually don't know any of them.

I hope your reading week is good.

    1. Happens to me, too, when I visit some sights. Gives me ideas though.

My reading week is going pretty well. Wish I was devoting more time to it, but things are busy.

(I stopped by to say "hi"!)

  6. I've not read any of these (though I know about Ripley). I just finished Ann Patchett's bel canto (I started it years ago and put it down). I'm still working on Terry Hayes' I Am Pilgrim (I keep putting it down to start something else).

    1. Yes, some obscure titles up there, but I am enjoying them so far. I am almost finished with Ripley. Liking it a lot! I know you like mysteries. Might give it a whirl!

I saw that you finished Bel Canto. I am a huge Patchett fan. Would love to visit her bookstore in Nashville in the hopes of running into her. I have I Am Pilgrim marked as "to-read". Are you liking it?
