She
began the ritual of arranging herself on the chair just so. Book to the left. Margarita
to the right. Lying prone, she reached her hand around and pulled the thin
string that held her swimsuit top in place. She hated tan lines.
Soaking
in the heat, her body warmed like a stone on hot pavement in summertime and she thoroughly relaxed into semi-consciousness. Her mind drifted as unfamiliar birds harmonized creating a symphony of soft background sounds.
That
is until the swelter of the hot Arizona sun warned her she’d forgotten
sunscreen for her back. Her skin was already tight from yesterday and hadn’t
yet turned its customary golden brown. She knew to be wary of Mother Nature.
Hearing
the subtle turning of pages, she angled her face in the direction of the sound. She had to squint to see who was sitting in the chair next to her. Hmmmm....
Did
it really matter who she asked for help? She didn’t know anyone here anyway.
Gathering
some chutzpa, she spoke up.
“Excuse
me. It could be quite scandalous if I attempted to lotion my back at the
moment. Would you mind terribly if I asked you for help?”
The
rapidly changing hue of her back was nothing compared to the color of his
face when her words actually registered with his brain. She noticed and was almost embarrassed
she'd even asked.
“Uh,
sure. Should we introduce ourselves first?”
“Not
necessary, do you think?”
Tilting
his head slightly to the side he thought, “Somebody’s got to do it.”
Squeezing
SPF 30 into his left hand, he began the application process along what seemed like an unending expanse of her “unsuited” spine. Trying to appear as discreet possible
as his hand approached her bikini bottom, the glint off his ring sent reflections like daggers into his eyes.
“Your
legs look like they’re getting fried too.”

Good one Gina - that was good! Of course I called him a jerk though.
ReplyDeleteAnd she didn't see the ring...
DeleteThanks, Kenya!
Hey, I say as long as the guy isn't her father he's fair game. LMAO!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's only sun lotion, right? (but a spray works well, too, but possibly not as interesting.
DeleteHmmmm Maybe I should stop asking my kid to do my back this summer... Hot post! hehe
ReplyDeleteDo!!! Then write about it. I have people for that purpose too but generally resort to a spray. Not as fun but easier to explain ;-)
DeleteI think she needs something stronger than 30, she better amp it up to 50 to cover that heated bikini body. Fun story. I like the unfamiliar birds harmonizing into a symphony. Nice image. I once dated a dermatologist, many years ago, and from that time on I never sunbathed again. Put the fear into me. (Gina, do you mean wary of Mother Nature, instead of weary? Certainly one should be wary. :) )
ReplyDeleteI'd say she does too! I sit in the shade or wear 45, constantly slathering MYSELF.
DeleteThanks! Proofread a ton but sometimes things just get overlooked. I appreciate it.
Dearest Church lady,
ReplyDeleteI am not so sure that I would say someone was gathering "chutzpah" because if you are "chutzpahdik" you aren't worried about nerves or appearances.
Other than that I like the story.
Dearest Maker of Fun (of me mostly or so it seems!),
DeleteI don't mind being called a "Church Lady" at all. As a matter of fact, I worked at my church several years back and I was in charge of counting the money (Must have been hired for my math skills and not my budget following ones).
I ALMOST consulted you before using the word so that I would use it in precisely the proper context. Learned something from you for once ;-).
Thanks! I try.
This is so cute! It made me smile (:
ReplyDeleteMaking you smile, Draug, makes me smile right back!!!!!!!
DeleteFun story. Makes me wonder if there's a bit of autobiography in here. This reminds me of a post you wrote about a couple skinny dipping and I'm thinking there's more to this story. Please write more. Very well done. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! The only autobiographical elements of this story are that I happened to be on vacation this past weekend and that I was on a sun lounger putting on sun lotion. However, I either put on my own (I have long arms that can reach just fine) or had one of my GIRLfriends handle my back.
DeleteAs to the skinny dipping story, that was totally fiction as well. How very exciting it would be to live the life you think that I do from these stories here. But I'm glad you believe my fiction. Wonder what happens next though??????
Do tell! ;)
DeleteGive me a minute to make some stuff up for you ;-)!!!!!!!
DeleteHa ha. What a fun story.
ReplyDeleteThank you Paula!!!! I love fun!
DeleteWell, isn't he helpful? He will probably want to apply a second layer just to make sure it smoothed out evenly. What a jerk!
ReplyDeleteShe should also be careful who she asks, I think. It's not all on him. I don't know if I would feel comfortable "helping" in a similar situation but sounds like fun for him and, I'm guessing, quite pleasant for her. Unless she was using him purely for the sunscreen?
DeleteOh, great character to hate! (or redeem later?) Nice story!
ReplyDeleteHadn't thought that far ahead but probably a little of both...
DeleteThanks!!!
Yeah, who needs introductions, just get to the job,you minion,eh?LOL!Loved the whole spin Gina-a great piece:-)
ReplyDeleteI think that was her attitude. She needed a job done. I'm glad you liked it, Atreyee! I love when you like my stuff.
DeleteI love this little bit of mysterious sexiness :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE mysterious sexiness, too! I wonder if there really are people out there that don't...
DeleteVery mischievous! I like the nerve of your man!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking he was very much taken aback by her request but felt somewhat "obligated". Would a guy out there really say no? I think so but when put on the spot, who really knows. I do too.
DeleteI doubt the sun is the only thing making him feel all hot. This is a fun piece, Gina!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up!
No doubt! Makes me happy to hear you say that!
DeleteOooh! He's in quite a pickle, isn't he? And she has no idea, likely!
ReplyDeleteSo many ways this could go...all wonderful. Great job!
If he leaves it strictly as a one time application, he may work his way out if it. And she has NO idea but asking a guy to do that is putting yourself in a precarious position.
DeleteThanks Tina!
sometimes flirting is fun. Just saying.
ReplyDeletethe last line is so seductive, I'm sure it's not supposed to be (ahem) but it is. He is asking permission and she will give it, if only to not have to deal with sunburned legs. ;)
I don't know why, but I liked this. Maybe it's your being coy and witty, but it suited you.
great way to weave the COLOR in.
