SSOC: How I Spent Five Days Alone

Anything Jana says on Sunday is what we get to do. She says we can brain dump all we want as long as it’s only five minutes worth. I should probably focus, then, because I can think of more than that. I’m staying, purposely, away from the elections.

No topic. Unedited. Five minutes begins now:

******************************

I’ve had the house to myself, life to myself, for the past five days and four nights. You'd have thought I’d have so much DONE in that stretch of time. Nada!

I don’t know about any of you but the more time I “think” I have, the more I flitter it away. Everything's put off until the very last split second so I can maximize my "wants" for the entire 4.75 days. Do you do this?

So here's what I did/wanted to do with 4.75 days of alone time.

I saw six movies. Which also means I ate a whole gob of popcorn (stomach ache?). Four at the theater and two at home. Here’s a quick rating (thumbs up or down) for each*.

People Like Us- Two Thumbs way, way up! Loved it!

Moonrise Kingdom- One Thumb up, One thumb sideways…very quirky, occasionally a little too much even for me and even though I love quirky! You wouldn't believe everyone who is in this movie.

Argo- Two Thumbs more than enthusiastically pumped way up high. Stay thru the credits. Affleck, et al., were fantastic.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower- Two Thumbs up, with enthusiasm but wish certain parts didn’t seem over acted by Emma Watson who I did love in this. All kinds of emotions here. Of course tears from me.

Pitch Perfect- One Thumb up, One Thumb 45 degrees down-ish. Chick date night and this was perfect for us girls.

Seven Psychopaths- Two thumbs wanting to point straight up but shaky…It’s hilarious. You must like intensely dark humor (ME! ME!). Lot’s of fun if you like this stuff. I do!

I think I have time to squeeze in one more!

***************************

*I cheated and added the movie photos outside the five minutes but of course you knew that.

  1. I was about to start reading Perks of Being a Wallflower. Wanted to read before the movie, but passed it on to a student to read first. Perhaps, I should go ahead and see the movie.

    1. I bet the book would be outstanding and actually, I might consider reading it. The movie was very, very good despite the wee bit of overacting by Emma. I loved Charlie (one of the main dudes). It's emotional at times and light at others.

    2. I haven't seen the movie yet, but having read the book years ago, it's amazing. It stuck with me. It's one of those that I would say to read first if you can. I can't wait to see the movie!

    3. Hey Kiki! I'm going to read it. I've got in on my "to read" list so I don't forget about it. I really wish I would have read it BEFORE the movie. I think it's going to be one of those where I'll wish I would have done so. The movie is really good!

    4. I'm glad to hear the movie is good, because I really enjoyed the book and I'm always hesitant to see the movie in that case.

And this is exactly how one should spend 5 days of free time! *High five*

    5. Thanks for the "high five", Azara! I'm going to read it but really wish it would have been reverse. Reading then seeing!

  2. You know on the rare occasion I get to be alone I don't accomplish much until they are literally on their way back. In the time they are gone it gets junky in here and I wonder how that happened. Who is leaving dishes in the sink? Why did I stop putting my shoes back? How come there's are a stack of clothes and pj's on my side of the bed? Who did that? - Not MOI? Glad you enjoyed some movies. I would have done the same thing with Netflix on my sofa with orange finger via Doritos and salsa.

    1. YOU are ME! Dishes in the sink, laundry on the floor. My bathroom looks like a bad department store fitting room!!! He's on his way home so I guess at some point SOON, I'll start the ten minute tidy! Ewwww to Doritos with orange stuff on them (that goes for Cheetos too). Yum to salsa and regular Doritos!

  3. Good movie pics! I wanted to see all of these -- especially Argo. It truly looks fantastic. And The Perks of Being a Wallflower is also a wonderful book. I'm a bit surprised it took ten years to pick it up as a film. I've been plugging that books with reluctant readers for a long time, and it's always well-received. With me only working PT and two young kids, we always wait for rentals though. So -- I'll have to put these on my line up. Thanks!

    1. Oh I remember the solely rental days well and the movie releases would never keep up with our ability to devour them. Argo is probably the best of all of them with Wallflower and People Like Us tied for 2 and the Seven Psychopaths if you like very dark humor!

  4. We just saw, People Like Us, the other day. My wife and I loved that movie. I remember seeing a trailer for it somewhere but completely missed it ever being in the theaters. It's such a shame, considering how good that movie is.

    1. I remember thinking about it when it first came out because I love Michelle Pfeiffer. I don't know how it slipped by though. We both loved it!

  5. I'd like to add 'Wallflower' to my to-read list, but it's already so long. I might just skip the book and see the movie, like I did with 'The Help.' But then again, I never know if it's going to be one of those "the book was way better" situations. I just saw 'The Lucky One' yesterday, and it was good, but the book was SO much better (and I'm not even usually a Nicholas Sparks fan).

    1. Mine is long-ish too but I did add it so I wouldn't forget. I really do want to read it to learn more about the characters. I'm NOT a Nicholas Sparks fan but on rec I would read The Luxky One. What have you read that you'd highly recommend (a favorite)?

    1. Growing up in Chicago, I watched Siskel and Ebert. Then Ebert and Roeper. It's their system but what I know. It was a great movie marathon! Love them!

  7. My husband and I are ALWAYS doing the painful dance of what should we watch. Thank you for this!

  8. I haven't been to a movie theater alone since college. I would go to matinees then right a report/critique for extra credit. So glad that you liked Argo. Will have to go see that one.

I went to most with a friend. I saw Wallflower with my bucket of buttered popcorn!

    1. If I had to pick two for you, Jessie, those would have been them. They were both great, quirky, different. I think you'd probably enjoy Moonrise Kingdom as well.

  11. That's awesome! Thank you for the great reviews - some of those movies I hadn't even heard before but now they are totally on my list.

  12. If I had 5 days to do whatever I wanted you can bet there would be 5 days worth of dirty clothes and dirty dishes to be done on the last day! I'm always amazed at how clean my house is when I work until 9 every night and how dirty it is if I'm done at 5 every night. I work way better under pressure.

    1. How can one person create such a mess in 5 days. EASY when the house is not the priority!!!! I'm the fastest picker upper in the Midwest. It was done in no time and exactly how it was when I started my little "at home" vacation. No harm, no foul. I work INTENSELY better under pressure. Always have!

  13. Wandering by from SOCS ...

What a great! wonderful! terrific! way to spend alone time. And why? why? why? would you voluntarily pollute alone time with chores???

    You chose wisely, grasshopper.

    1. I love your words..."voluntarily pollute alone time with chores???" Words after my own heart! So, I didn't! I think you'd be proud of my choices.

      Thanks for visiting, Jules.

  15. Seeing these movies doesn't seem like a waste of time to me. Of course, I used to go to the cheap second-run theater weekly (usually alone), plus rent tons of movies and keep up on the latest releases. That was before motherhood. I'm glad you indulged this way (except for too much popcorn-tummy aches are no good).
    Thanks for the reviews!

    1. We still see a lot of movies On Demand or Netflix if we can't go. When I first moved to the city after college, my roommate and I used to go to an afternoon show on Saturdays and Sundays and then wander into the next one we wanted to see right after (it was exciting and scary all at the same time because we were too poor to pay for two in one day. Don't tell anyone!).

When our kids were small, we watched anything that was at Blockbuster (I don't think we had any premium channels back then because we never would have paid for them.) Some of my very best memories are of those poor days, with small children, snuggling on a couch watching movie after movie!

I'd waste my time like this any chance I got!

  16. my nephew gave me Perks of being a Wallflower book years ago. years before he finally revealed he was gay. i read the book and loved it. but found it odd that he gave me, his aunt, the book as a gift. you know? anyway, i'm very curious to see the movie. and i'm not a Ben Afflek fan but i really do want to see that one, too!

    1. I can see where you'd think it odd. Very interesting gift from a nephew to begin with then due to content. I'd be interested to hear what you think of the movie so please let me know. I'm not a huge Affleck fan either but you forget it's him, almost, in this movie. It was REALLY good and I will see it again when it comes out as a rental. Don't pass up Seven Psychopaths if you like black, black humor.
